eBay Completes Depop Acquisition from Etsy in Approximately $1.4 Billion Cash Deal

On July 30, eBay announced that it had officially completed its acquisition of UK-based fashion resale marketplace Depop from Etsy.

The all-cash transaction was valued at approximately $1.4 billion, reflecting purchase price adjustments from the approximately $1.2 billion acquisition announced earlier this year. Following the acquisition, Depop will continue operating as an independent brand, maintaining its name, app, platform, community, and company culture.

Summary

  • eBay has officially completed its acquisition of Depop from Etsy.
  • The all-cash transaction was valued at approximately $1.4 billion following purchase price adjustments.
  • Depop will continue operating as an independent brand while retaining its platform, community, and brand identity.
  • The acquisition strengthens eBay’s position in fashion resale and expands its reach among Gen Z consumers.
  • The deal comes as competition intensifies across the global resale market, driven by dedicated resale platforms and brand-owned resale programs.

The acquisition supports eBay’s strategy to strengthen its leadership in fashion resale by expanding its reach among younger consumers. Fashion is already one of eBay’s largest categories, generating more than $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume (GMV).

Jamie Iannone, President and CEO of eBay, said: “Depop has built a trusted, social-first marketplace with a vibrant community and a strong position in the resale fashion market. We believe that combining Depop’s unique brand and loyal customer base with eBay’s global scale, marketplace expertise, and technology will accelerate its long-term growth.”

Peter Semple, CEO of Depop, added: “Joining the eBay family marks an exciting new chapter for Depop. We remain committed to building the next generation of fashion resale by empowering our community to buy, sell, and connect through style while benefiting from eBay’s global resources and expertise.”

Resale Competition Continues to Intensify

The acquisition highlights eBay’s broader commitment to strengthening its position in the global resale economy, where competition has accelerated significantly in recent years.

Driven by growing consumer interest in sustainability, circular fashion, and value-conscious shopping, the global resale market continues to expand rapidly. Demand among Gen Z and Millennial consumers has fueled the growth of dedicated resale platforms, while investors and established retailers increasingly view secondhand fashion as a long-term growth category.

Competition has intensified as platforms such as The RealReal, Poshmark, Vinted, and thredUP continue investing in customer acquisition, authentication services, logistics, and technology to differentiate their marketplaces.

At the same time, an increasing number of brands have launched their own branded resale programs. Initiatives including Patagonia’s Worn Wear and lululemon’s Like New, together with technology providers such as Archive that enable brands to build their own resale marketplaces, are reshaping the competitive landscape by allowing brands to participate directly in the circular economy while maintaining stronger customer relationships.

Across the industry, companies are differentiating themselves through enhanced authentication services, personalized product recommendations, improved logistics, and community-driven shopping experiences, making innovation a key competitive advantage.

Against this backdrop, eBay has continued expanding its investments in fashion, including its Authenticity Guarantee program for luxury goods, watches, handbags, sneakers, and trading cards. The addition of Depop further strengthens the company’s ability to engage younger consumers while broadening its leadership in fashion resale.

As competition in the resale market enters a new phase, the industry will be watching closely to see how eBay leverages its global marketplace, technology, and operational scale while preserving the community-first identity that has made Depop one of the most influential resale platforms among Gen Z consumers.
