yoshiokubo Spring/Summer 2027: The Body in Motion and the “Bones” Beneath

Under the theme “Natural Born Nomads,” yoshiokubo reimagines the contemporary runner through clothing that balances physical freedom with an underlying structural strength.

yoshiokubo presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection on August 31, 2026, during Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2027 S/S.

Titled “Natural Born Nomads,” the collection considers people who move through life according to their own will—unbound by others and unattached to any single group. A traditional Mongolian ger, a portable dwelling associated with nomadic life, stood at the center of the venue as models walked around it, extending the season’s concept beyond the clothes and into the entire show environment.

Yet the nomad envisioned by designer Yoshio Kubo is not simply a traveler moving through distant landscapes. It is also a figure found within contemporary urban life: someone who follows their instincts, chooses how to navigate each day and begins to run when the desire arises.

Through the structure of sportswear and his characteristically experimental details, Kubo translated that personal freedom into clothing.

The Freedom to Run Without a Reason

The collection began with a scene Kubo witnessed along the coast of Los Angeles. A young man dressed like a hippie stepped out of a battered car and began to run as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Kubo was drawn to the simplicity of the gesture—running simply because he wanted to—and the sense of ease it conveyed.

That encounter inspired a desire to express, through clothing, a way of living as freely as a nomad.

The runway did not offer running apparel converted directly into fashion. Instead, hooded shell jackets, shorts, wide-leg trousers, utility vests and translucent ponchos took movement as their starting point while retaining a clear place within everyday wardrobes.

Biker shorts and relaxed shorts were paired with rounded outerwear and voluminous tops, creating a contrast between visual weight across the upper body and lightness through the legs. The trousers ranged from softly tapered forms to wider silhouettes accented with cords and elongated components that shifted with each step.

Running appeared not as a performance measured by speed, but as an expression of the space required for the body to move freely.

Sculpting Volume Around the Body

Space between the garment and the body became one of the collection’s defining elements.

Outerwear was constructed with generous volume through the shoulders and sleeves, enveloping the body without restricting it. Elsewhere, cords and belts pulled that volume inward at the waist, introducing definition and tension into otherwise expansive silhouettes.

Translucent layers blurred the boundary between clothing and the body as fabric caught the air in motion. By contrast, pocketed vests and sculptural shell jackets carried the visual strength of utility wear.

Lightness and construction were not treated as opposing ideas. The freedom offered by these clothes depended on a careful calibration of proportion, layering and placement. This balance reflected yoshiokubo’s longstanding exploration of unconventional patterns and details: the garments appeared relaxed, yet their ease was precisely engineered.

From “Born” to “Bone”

Another key to the collection was the idea of the bone.

While revisiting the 1994 film Natural Born Killers, Kubo’s attention shifted from the word “born” to “bone”—the internal framework that supports the body. That association became a recurring, though often concealed, element throughout the season.

Organic, curved components and cord-like embellishments appeared along trousers, tops, vests and around the neck. Their irregular contours suggested a visual relationship with bones and the structure of the human body without reducing the idea to a literal motif.

The decision to consider the body’s hidden framework within a collection centered on physical freedom brought greater depth to the season.

Translucent fabrics, swinging cords and silhouettes that stood away from the body created fluidity. Bone-like details, meanwhile, introduced a sense of structural tension. Here, freedom did not mean abandoning all form or direction. It meant retaining an internal foundation while choosing one’s own path forward.

A Palette Between the City and the Earth

Black, deep navy, brown, khaki, olive and sand beige formed the core of the collection’s restrained palette. White, pale gray, vivid red and flashes of yellow appeared at intervals, bringing rhythm and contrast to the otherwise muted landscape.

Hoods and caps partially obscured the models’ faces, evoking anonymous figures moving through a city. Earthier combinations of khaki, beige and brown suggested soil, sand and dry vegetation, while also establishing a visual dialogue with the ger at the center of the venue.

Glossy technical surfaces were placed alongside brushed textures, translucent materials, fine cords and trailing fringe. These contrasting finishes gave dimension to similar tones and destabilized the divisions between the urban and the natural, the synthetic and the organic.

Clothes Without a Fixed Purpose

Although the brand describes the season as a collection for the contemporary runner, yoshiokubo’s runner is not limited to someone participating in sport.

The outerwear offered the practical sensation of shelter, but sheer materials and moving embellishments softened its utilitarian character. Shirts and jackets that might otherwise have appeared formal were loosened through wide trousers and proportions that stood away from the body.

Sportswear and daily dress, the city and nature, utility and decoration moved easily across one another. The refusal to confine each garment to a single role became the clearest expression of the collection’s nomadic spirit.

The same garment might serve movement on one day and, on another, offer the small lift that helps someone move forward. According to the wearer’s purpose and mood, clothing quietly shifts in meaning.

The motif of “bone”—drawn from the “born” in the collection’s title—is tucked throughout as well. Beneath the fluid, weightless materials lies a core-like strength that supports the body. Relaxed, yet never letting go of one’s own center, the nomad yoshiokubo envisions is not a figure wandering without aim, but someone who chooses their own daily life by their own will.

To be worn as an outfit on one day, and to lighten the heart on another—yoshiokubo invites you to wear these clothes freely, according to the mood of the moment. Its Spring/Summer 2027 collection offers that quiet, modest wish.
