Chanel Acquires 188-Year-Old Heritage Shirtmaker Charvet

On July 2, French luxury house Chanel announced its acquisition of Charvet, the heritage shirtmaker founded in 1838. After 188 years of independent ownership, Charvet will begin a new chapter as part of the Chanel portfolio. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition also includes Charvet’s historic headquarters and boutique building on Paris’s Place Vendôme. The square is also closely associated with the house, as it is home to the Ritz Paris, where founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel lived for more than three decades.

Summary

  • Chanel has acquired Charvet, the heritage shirtmaker founded in 1838.
  • The acquisition includes Charvet’s headquarters and boutique building on Place Vendôme in Paris.
  • The relationship between the two houses deepened following their collaboration on Matthieu Blazy’s debut Chanel collection.
  • The acquisition reflects Chanel’s long-term commitment to preserving craftsmanship and safeguarding French savoir-faire.

A Legacy Built by the World’s Oldest Shirtmaker

Founded in 1838 by Joseph-Christophe Charvet, Charvet is widely recognized as the world’s first specialist shirtmaker and remains France’s oldest shirtmaker today. In addition to bespoke and ready-to-wear shirts, the maison offers ties, scarves, loungewear, and other accessories, and has dressed generations of distinguished figures, including Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Sofia Coppola, and David Beckham.

Today, Charvet continues to produce its collections from its historic boutique on Place Vendôme and its workshop in Saint-Gaultier, central France. The house preserves an exceptional level of craftsmanship through approximately 6,000 shirting fabrics and its renowned made-to-measure expertise.

Matthieu Blazy Revives a Historic Connection

The relationship between Chanel and Charvet entered a new chapter with Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection for Chanel, presented in October 2025.

The collection featured oversized shirts crafted by Charvet, distinguished by Chanel’s signature chain detail along the hem, blending the house’s iconic design codes with Charvet’s renowned shirtmaking expertise. The collaboration continued with Chanel’s Cruise 2027 collection, further strengthening the relationship between the two maisons in a remarkably short period.

The partnership also reflects a connection that dates back more than a century. Founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel famously drew inspiration from the shirts worn by her partner, Arthur “Boy” Capel, incorporating elements of menswear into the modern women’s wardrobe. Capel himself was a Charvet customer, making the acquisition a symbolic continuation of a longstanding relationship rooted in the heritage of both maisons.

Continued Investment in Craftsmanship

Chanel has long invested in specialist manufacturers and heritage maisons to strengthen its production capabilities while preserving exceptional craftsmanship and traditional artisanal expertise.

Over the years, the house has brought companies including Eres, Orlebar Brown, Barrie, Maison Michel, and Goossens into its portfolio, positioning the acquisition of Charvet as part of this long-term strategy. Through its recent Métiers d’art collections, Chanel has also continued to highlight the savoir-faire of the artisans and ateliers that play a vital role in the house’s creative identity.

Against this backdrop, the acquisition represents more than an expansion of Chanel’s brand portfolio. Rather, it reflects a long-term investment in preserving the heritage and technical expertise of one of France’s historic maisons. As Matthieu Blazy’s creative leadership enters a new phase, the move also underscores Chanel’s commitment to strengthening the house through both creative excellence and manufacturing expertise.
