Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2027: “GRATITUDE” as a Tribute to the Past and a Vision for the Future
On June 29, Marc Jacobs unveiled its Spring/Summer 2027 collection at the New York Public Library.
This season’s central theme was “GRATITUDE.” In the statement released ahead of the show, Jacobs reflected on finding abundance even in life’s most uncertain moments, writing that “amidst challenge lay purpose and through change lay possibility,” and describing creation as “my truest form of self-expression” and an act of gratitude. Beneath the spectacle of the runway lay a deeply personal message—one that honored the people, experiences, and creative influences that have shaped both his life and his career.
Expressing “GRATITUDE” as a Forward-Looking Creative Vision
The word “gratitude” often evokes warmth, nostalgia, and natural materials. Marc Jacobs, however, presented something entirely different.
The runway featured translucent PVC shirts, glossy vinyl fabrics, sheer dresses, patent finishes, and crocodile-embossed textures—materials that felt distinctly artificial and futuristic. Sensual lingerie-inspired tops and bodysuits were layered beneath transparent garments, creating looks that balanced lightness with sensuality through carefully orchestrated transparency.
Rather than expressing gratitude as a longing for the past, Jacobs reimagined it as a force that propels creativity forward. Throughout the collection, that optimistic perspective was translated into materials, styling, and construction.
A Tribute to Three Decades of Fashion History
Accompanying the collection was a reference list titled “Credits and Receipts.”
It cited an extraordinary range of influences, including Yves Saint Laurent’s “LOVE” collection (1970), Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz (1979), Chanel Spring/Summer 1993, Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 1993, Junya Watanabe Spring/Summer 1996, Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 1998 and 2000, Prada Spring/Summer 2007, and Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2009.
Together, these references span nearly three decades of fashion history.
More than a list of inspirations, they represent a gesture of gratitude toward the designers, collections, and cultural moments that helped shape Marc Jacobs’ own creative language. In many ways, the collection reads as a love letter to the history of fashion itself.
By revisiting both his own archive and those of designers he has long admired, Jacobs was not looking backward out of nostalgia, but reaffirming the foundations from which to move forward.
Elevating Industrial Materials into Elegance
Among the collection’s most striking elements was its use of PVC and vinyl.
Ordinarily associated with sportswear or experimental fashion, these materials took on an entirely different character under Jacobs’ direction. Paired with chiffon, sheer knitwear, lingerie-inspired silhouettes, and delicate chain belts, they acquired an unexpected softness and elegance, almost resembling organza.
The interplay between transparency, layered textures, and luminous surfaces emphasized not only the architecture of each garment but also suggested a new relationship between clothing and the body itself.
Painting Life Through Color
Color played an equally significant role throughout the collection.
The palette began with muted shades of smoky pink, dusty blue, brown, and mauve before gradually unfolding into vibrant reds, oranges, turquoise, lavender, and yellow. Toward the finale, gold, black, and deep green introduced a greater sense of richness and strength.
This progression felt almost like a visual timeline of life itself. The evolving palette echoed the spirit of GRATITUDE, suggesting that joy, hardship, transformation, and growth all become layers that enrich our personal journey.
Chain Belts as “Invisible Threads”
Another recurring motif was the chain belt, which appeared throughout nearly every look.
In the show’s statement, Jacobs refers to the “invisible threads of structure” that have supported his life.
Seen through that lens, the repeated use of chains seemed to transcend their function as accessories, becoming symbolic representations of those unseen connections. Encounters, memories, experiences, and acts of creation all become the foundation of one’s identity, and the collection transformed those invisible bonds into something tangible through fashion.

Embracing the Past While Moving Toward the Future
The Spring/Summer 2027 collection reflected on Marc Jacobs’ creative journey while signaling a renewed commitment to what comes next.
The brand itself is entering a new chapter following LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s announcement that it will sell Marc Jacobs to brand management company WHP Global. Against this backdrop of transition, GRATITUDE carried a message that extended far beyond appreciation for the past.

Instead, the collection suggested that every experience accumulated over time becomes the foundation for future creation. Through 31 looks, Marc Jacobs quietly reaffirmed that honoring one’s history is not an act of looking back—it is the beginning of moving forward.
