Alaïa Reopens Its Plaza 66 Boutique in Shanghai

French fashion house Alaïa has reopened its boutique at Shanghai’s Plaza 66 following its relocation to the mall’s third floor. Conceived as an intimate retail environment, the renewed space brings fashion, design, and art together while reflecting the Maison’s pursuit of purity and exceptional craftsmanship.

Where Organic Curves Meet Geometric Precision

The boutique continues the distinctive architectural language Alaïa has developed across its global retail spaces. Its façade features circular geometric forms that reinterpret the Maison’s signature perforation motif, while a central glass surface introduces a sense of openness and transparency.

Throughout the interior, organic curves reminiscent of the body are placed in dialogue with sharply defined geometric forms. Sculptural yet restrained, the design allows the clothing and accessories to remain central to the experience. It translates Alaïa’s enduring exploration of sensuality and structure into an architectural setting.

A monochrome palette of black and white defines the boutique, complemented by Carrara marble, Macassar ebony, and stainless steel. At the entrance and inside the fitting rooms, soft nude-toned leather brings warmth to the otherwise graphic interior.

An Intimate Environment Shaped by Design

The boutique features a selection of furniture by Brazilian designer Sergio Rodrigues, alongside pieces specially designed by Philippe Malouin.

Their sculptural volumes and fluid curves echo the organic lines that run throughout the space. Together, these elements soften the rigor of the architecture, creating an environment that feels harmonious, intimate, and inviting.

Guan Xiao Explores the Relationship Between the Body and the Object

Reflecting Alaïa’s longstanding dialogue with art, the boutique also presents Things I Couldn’t Forget: Nose Ornament, Quimbaya, Colombia (2019) by Chinese artist Guan Xiao.

Made from dyed fiberglass, spiral wire, stainless steel tubing, and industrial components, the work brings contrasting materials and references into a single sculptural composition. It draws together imagery associated with different periods and cultures, challenging the established contexts and meanings attached to objects.

Working across sculpture, installation, and video, Guan develops her practice through a collage-based approach that connects seemingly disparate materials, structures, and visual references. Organic, technological, industrial, and archaeological elements coexist within forms that resist a singular interpretation.

Bringing fashion, design, and art together, the renewed boutique reflects Alaïa’s distinctive aesthetic in every detail, inviting visitors to experience the Maison’s world.
