On September 10, Public School New York, helmed by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection during New York Fashion Week.

Following a six-year hiatus, the collection marks the brand’s second outing since its return. Moving beyond the “homecoming” of the previous season, Spring/Summer 2027, titled “LIVING PROOF,” proposes a new wardrobe designed to adapt to an urban environment in constant flux.

A Wardrobe Responsive to Urban Change

“If Fall 26 was our homecoming, Spring 27 is a survey of our new, yet familiar surroundings, and a celebration that everything keeps evolving,” the brand explained.

At the heart of the collection is the idea of preparing for unpredictable change. Drawing equally from memories formed in childhood and a future whose contours remain uncertain, the designers created a modular wardrobe that can be adapted according to the wearer’s environment and needs.

The palette remained restrained, moving through navy, black, gray, and stone. Quiet enough to blend naturally into the urban landscape, the clothes nevertheless carried an underlying sense of tension and functionality. Rather than relying on vivid color, each look established its identity through shifts in silhouette, contrasting textures, and precise layering.

Reworking the Uniform as Modern Equipment

The concept of the uniform—an idea embedded in the Public School name itself—provides another key to understanding the season. Here, however, the school is not confined to the classroom. The city, society, and the wider world are treated as spaces for continual learning.

This idea emerged most clearly through the brand’s signature structured shoulders. Jackets and coats with exaggerated proportions sharpened the outline of the body while also suggesting a second skin designed to offer protection from external elements such as wind and rain.

Tailored jackets were paired with fluid wide-leg trousers and shorts, bringing a sense of ease to otherwise formal silhouettes. Sleeveless jackets, knee-length shorts, and long socks offered subtle echoes of school uniforms.

Yet the result was never nostalgic. By elongating proportions and deliberately shifting the placement of layers, Chow and Osborne transformed familiar uniform codes into functional equipment for contemporary urban life.

Depth Through Contrasting Materials

The collection brought together natural wool, baby rib cotton, yarn-dyed cupro, viscose, and cashmere cotton, alongside washed synthetic fabrics and ripstop nylon.

Precise tailoring met performance-driven textiles; glossy leather contrasted with faded denim; crisp woven shirting was layered against soft jersey. These opposing surfaces gave dimension and depth to the collection’s predominantly dark palette.

Among the most striking details were lengths of jersey wrapped around the body and layered looks that revealed shirt collars and cuffs beneath. Rather than treating each garment as a fixed and finished form, the designers approached clothing as something that could be removed, loosened, and reconfigured. New shapes emerged through overlapping fabrics, allowing the relationship between garment and body to shift with the wearer’s movement.

Hardware-free belts doubled as crossbody straps, offering a practical way to carry bags and accessories. Waterproof galoshes were designed to cover different types of footwear, while an exaggerated toe spring visually emphasized the body’s forward motion.

Public School’s latest collection proposes a wardrobe shaped for life in a changing city. Its understated ability to blend into the urban landscape is balanced by protective, structured forms, bringing the brand’s philosophy of “perfect imperfection” back into focus.
