Coach Spring 2027: Love, Memory and the Beauty of Time

On September 9, Coach unveiled its Spring 2027 collection ahead of New York Fashion Week.

The show took place at Pier 36, on Manhattan’s East River waterfront. Inside the darkened, expansive space, neutral-toned sofas and low tables were arranged around the runway, with a gold-brown curtain hanging at the far end. The setting felt less like a conventional runway venue than a private club welcoming close friends.

On each table sat olives, breadsticks, nuts and wine. The collection notes arrived in a leather booklet reminiscent of a bar menu, and as guests turned its pages they enjoyed sparkling wine and “Coach 85,” an 85th-anniversary cocktail made with Tanqueray gin.

Guests came from around the world. From Japan, Coach global ambassador Lilas Ikuta, along with KOHARU, Haruka Fukuhara and Jyutaro Yamanaka, took in the collection.

Also seen in the front row were fellow global ambassador Elle Fanning, along with Troye Sivan, Storm Reid, Yasmin Finney, Avantika Vandanapu, Iris Law and Ayra Starr.

When the lights dimmed and John Grant’s “Marz” began to play softly, a model appeared in a charcoal-gray jacket and trousers long enough to pool at the feet. Though the evening celebrated 85 years, it opened not with spectacle but with quiet color and restraint.

For the 85th anniversary, Creative Director Stuart Vevers looked not to a nostalgic retrospective but to honoring the people who have built Coach while welcoming those who will shape its future. That spirit was captured in this season’s guiding phrase, “Love Is the Message.”

What Coach focused on this season was fashion that grows more beautiful the longer it is worn and loved. Clothes and bags were seen not as most beautiful the moment they are finished, but as companions whose value deepens through daily use, softening, fading and taking on creases and sheen.

The first half unfolded in charcoal, dove gray, soft brown, stone and black. Tailored jackets with clean shoulder lines were paired with long trousers pooling at the feet, adding a street-born nonchalance to precise tailoring.

Many looks were worn without a shirt beneath the jacket, revealing bare skin. Cropped knits and sleeveless leather tops were combined with voluminous trousers, while jackets or shirts tied around the waist added further layers. This half-dressed quality stripped tailoring of its formal rigidity.

Outerwear was tailored as if turned inside out, exposing linings and internal structures normally kept hidden. Some pieces left their facings, raw edges and catch stitching on view: finished garments that still seemed to be changing.

Signature Coach elements were stretched, reversed and pieced together to reveal their construction. The approach echoed the season’s stance, treating 85 years of history not as something fixed and complete, but as something still being rewritten.

Soft nappa leather lent lightness and movement to leather tops and outerwear, while kisslock pockets recalled the history of Coach’s leather goods. Garment-dyed, faded heavyweight jersey gave jackets and trench coats the familiar feel of long-worn clothing.

At the chest, crystal pendants inspired by chandelier prisms and Art Deco watch cases hung in clusters on leather cords. Bow brooches on the lapels suggested ribbons tied around a gift. These accessories were styled less as finishing touches than as personal objects gathered over many years.

As the show went on, the fluidity of silk and satin joined the gray and brown tailoring. Bias-cut dresses and skirts appeared in repurposed printed lining fabrics, denim, overdyed georgette, lamé and sequins.

Dresses fell along the body, their hems swaying with each step and their surfaces shifting with the light. Looks combining knitted or crocheted sleeves had an improvised air, as if separate pieces had been layered on a whim, and this unforced styling carried the season’s sense of intimacy.

This languid, delicate mood held the presence of Hope Sandoval, the voice of Mazzy Star. A 1990s-tinged languor and the glimmer of Lurex and sequins catching the light for an instant: Vevers held these contrasting elements together within a single memory.

Behind this lay a personal experience. Years later, now in New York, Vevers again shared the Mazzy Star music he had once listened to in 1990s London with a friend from his university days. The same songs took on new meaning as the places, families and lives around them changed.

The image drawn from “Fade Into You,” of one life held within another, echoed in the layering of different garments and in dresses where another color emerged beneath a sheer train.

The palette, too, brightened from gray, brown and black into powder pink, periwinkle, mint and butter yellow. Pale floral prints did not depict spring flowers vividly but dissolved naturally into gray and silver fabrics, like memories whose outlines have blurred over time.

The collection also reflected memorable scenes from birthdays and weddings: silk and satin, pastel-colored cakes, trains flowing from bias-cut dresses, silver and gold, pearl-like light, and a tuxedo worn and treasured for years. Each was a motif evoking celebration.

Soon leather party hats and crowns appeared on the models’ heads. Corsages adorned the lapels, and confetti-like embellishments were scattered across bags and shoes. Even motifs evoking a birthday, from gift boxes and cards to gift tags and ribbons, were rendered in Coach’s signature leather.

Yet what was depicted was not a flawless party just beginning. Gold and silver metallic foil was rubbed into the leather, and surfaces combining glitter with red nail polish carried cracked, handworked traces. What emerged was the scene left after someone has celebrated: confetti across the floor, a forgotten hat, an opened gift.

The collection notes also touch on Vevers’s memory of the day he married the love of his life in this city, shortly after same-sex marriage became legal in New York. They describe the soft gray marble around City Hall and Wall Street, confetti left on the pavement, and metal surfaces polished by countless hands over the years.

These memories of New York became one key to reading the season’s grays and metallics, and its materials marked by the passage of time.

As with the clothing, the bags expressed the difference between owning something and living with it.

The new Turnlock Tote drew on a 1970 Coach design and centered on the turnlock introduced by Bonnie Cashin, the brand’s first lead designer. In boarded leather and suede, it was finished by hand with metallic foil, confetti and glitter.

The Inside-Out Brooklyn deliberately turned the internal structure of one of Coach’s defining recent bags to the outside. The Collaged Tabby, meanwhile, brought together vintage Coach pouches, reassembling leather goods from different eras into a single bag.

On the feet were the slim Hudson Sneaker, evoking a 1970s tennis shoe, and Western boots in soft calf leather. Metallic rub-off finishes, confetti, glitter and nail polish gave each pair the character of something altered by hand.

At the root of this thinking is the Glovetanned Leather used in Coach’s earliest bags. Inspired by a baseball glove that grows softer and more beautiful the more it is used, the leather records the time spent with its owner in its color and sheen. A bag made by someone’s hands goes on to accompany its owner through work, dates and travel; it may be caught in the rain, given as a gift, repaired, and passed down to the next generation. The fading, creases and marks it gathers are not mere wear, but a record of the time shared with its owner.

Toward the end, gold, silver, pink, blue and red brightened the runway. Lurex and sequin tops and long skirts that shifted color with the angle of view were layered with sheer trains in powder pink, red and ice blue.

Beginning in quiet gray, the show gathered light and color as it moved toward its 85th-anniversary celebration.

As the final look left the runway, the show flowed directly into a finale celebrating 85 years. The curtain at the back opened to reveal musicians from UpBeat NYC, a nonprofit that provides free music education to children in the Bronx.

Strings and saxophones struck up MFSB’s “Love Is the Message” as a disco ball descended slowly from the ceiling. When the models reappeared, eight voguing dancers directed by Arturo Lyons joined them, and the atmosphere of the room shifted completely.

As gold party hats and sequined dresses caught the light of the disco ball, confetti poured down from above, wrapping the entire venue in a festive mood.

Led by the performers, guests passed through to “Coach Club 85,” revealed beyond the curtain. The runway show gave way seamlessly to an after-party, and the 85th-anniversary celebration continued.

“Love Is the Message,” which crowned the finale, is a track deeply tied to the party culture David Mancuso built in 1970s New York. The invitation to his first party, held at 647 Broadway on Valentine’s Day in 1970, read “Love Saves the Day.” Its spirit of connecting people through music and dance resonates with the “Love Is the Message” theme Coach embraced this season.

Sharing time with others; using, caring for and, when needed, mending an object; and passing it on to someone else. Not reproducing the past, but carrying the love and memory held within it into the future: that is the message from Coach as it marks 85 years.
