Miu Miu Premieres Women’s Tales #32, Avec Kim, at the Venice Film Festival

Italian luxury brand Miu Miu premiered Avec Kim, the 32nd installment of its short-film series “Miu Miu Women’s Tales,” on September 5 as part of Giornate degli Autori during the Venice International Film Festival.

Written and directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Claire Denis, the short stars Suzanne Lindon and Kim Gordon. It was screened alongside Discipline, the series’ 31st installment, directed by Mona Fastvold.

Summary

A Wordless Journey Through Paris

The film opens inside a windowless car repair shop illuminated by bright white fluorescent lights. A young mechanic, her face and overalls covered in grease, emerges from beneath a hulking sedan from the 1980s. After finishing the day’s work and washing herself, she takes the restored car out into the daylight.

Now dressed in dark leather, with hair and sunglasses evoking another era, she moves through the streets of Paris. Without exchanging words, she passes through a succession of poetic encounters and minor mysteries before eventually meeting Kim.

Rather than relying on conventional dialogue or a clearly defined narrative, Avec Kim unfolds through movement, sound, glances and the physical presence of its characters. The approach reflects the distinctly sensory language of Denis’ filmmaking. As the director has said, “capturing bodies on film is the only thing that interests me.”

Denis is known for allowing actors considerable freedom to adapt and improvise. In Avec Kim, the camera remains close to the performers, observing how gestures and physical movement communicate what dialogue leaves unspoken.

Kim Gordon Shapes the Film’s Sound

Lindon, who plays the young mechanic, made her acting debut in Spring Blossom in 2020. She also wrote and directed the film at the age of 19. In Avec Kim, she moves between two identities: a worker immersed in the physical demands of the garage and an enigmatic driver navigating the city.

Gordon plays the titular Kim. A co-founder of the influential art-rock band Sonic Youth, she has built a multidisciplinary career spanning music, visual art, writing and fashion culture.

In addition to appearing in the film, Gordon composed its score. Her expansive, sensual soundscape accompanies the car’s movement through Paris, giving shape to the tensions, encounters and moments of intimacy that emerge along the way.

The film both embraces and questions familiar representations of women, from ideas of female strength to the playful force of friendship. It also considers how clothing can alter a character’s identity, posture and relationship with the surrounding world.

Fashion as a Character Within the Story

Launched in 2011, “Miu Miu Women’s Tales” invites women filmmakers from around the world to examine femininity, identity and self-expression in the 21st century through their own cinematic perspectives.

Rather than functioning simply as costume, Miu Miu’s collections are woven into the narrative of each film. Clothing becomes an active presence, capable of reshaping the characters who wear it and influencing how they move through their respective worlds.

The series also extends Miuccia Prada’s long-standing exploration of femininity into cinema. Reflecting on the project, Prada said, “with the Women’s Tales, we created a conversation with women about women.”

Through 32 films, the project has developed into an ongoing dialogue between fashion and filmmaking, offering women directors the freedom to construct stories through distinct cultural, emotional and visual lenses.

In Avec Kim, Denis brings her characteristic attention to bodies, gestures and human connection to that dialogue. The result is an intimate Parisian road movie about women from different generations, the emotional possibilities of friendship and the transformative role of dress.

Avec Kim is available through Miu Miu’s digital channels and is scheduled to stream globally on MUBI at a later date.
