A Sculptural Silhouette Built Stitch by Stitch

For Homo Faber 2026, Alaïa will present a gown that places the savoir-faire of knitwear at its center. The design combines a fitted, sleeveless bodice with a flared skirt embellished with silk feathers, each individually cut and sewn by hand.

Rather than treating knit solely as a soft and flexible material, the Maison approaches it as a medium for sculptural construction. Its precise technique is balanced by the inherent sensuality of fabric shaped closely around the body, creating a silhouette defined by movement, depth and dimension.

Knitwear has long served as an important area of creative expression for Alaïa. In this piece, material, technique and silhouette do not function as separate elements. Each informs the other, gradually forming a structure in which every stitch contributes to the architecture of the gown.

Connecting Light, Materials and the Human Hand

Organized and curated by the Michelangelo Foundation, Homo Faber is a cultural movement dedicated to showcasing exceptional artisans and contemporary craftsmanship from around the world. Through its biennial exhibition and educational initiatives, it examines how traditional skills continue to evolve within contemporary creative practice.

The fourth edition is titled An Island of Light. Set across the historic buildings and grounds of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the exhibition explores the fundamental relationship between light, materials and the human hand through a series of immersive installations.

Artistic direction is led by British artist and designer Es Devlin. Through her use of light and spatial staging, the exhibition draws attention to the creativity of its participating artisans, the techniques behind their work and the distinct character of the materials they use.

Alaïa’s gown reflects this broader theme through a silhouette formed by a succession of hand-executed processes, from each knitted stitch to every individually attached silk feather. Moving between fashion, craft and sculptural expression, the piece reveals how clothing can become an architecture of technique, material and the body.
