CHARINYEH Makes Its Tokyo Runway Debut with “Island Tides”

On September 3, 2026, Taiwanese label CHARINYEH made its debut at Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO, presenting its Spring/Summer 2027 collection.

Founded by Cha-Rin Yeh in 1985, CHARINYEH has spent more than four decades exploring the relationship between clothing, the body and space. For its first standalone runway show in Tokyo, the brand presented “Island Tides,” a collection rooted in Taiwan’s island geography and the physical sensations that emerge when the body surrenders itself to water.

Summary

  • CHARINYEH staged its first standalone runway show in Tokyo during Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2027 S/S
  • Titled “Island Tides,” the collection explored the relationship between Taiwan as an island, the surrounding sea, and the body
  • Unrestrictive silhouettes and three-dimensional cutting evoked the buoyancy of water and the rhythm of the tides
  • A palette that moved from white to aqua blue, lime, navy and black created a visual journey from the water’s surface to the depths below

A Quiet Surface in White

The show opened with a sequence of weightless looks in white and ivory.

Boxy tops, dresses that floated gently away from the body, voluminous trousers and asymmetrically layered fabrics established the collection’s visual vocabulary. While the outlines remained precise, each garment left space for air to move between cloth and skin. Loose threads, swaying fringes and translucent layers recalled ripples spreading across the water or seaweed slowly unfurling beneath the surface.

For Yeh, the sea is not merely “a landscape to look at,” but “a presence felt through the body.” That distinction shaped the collection. Rather than depicting the ocean literally, she expressed it through the space each garment created around the wearer—a space for movement, breath and bodily freedom.

Shoulders and bodices were cut to sit away from the figure, while sculptural construction gave definition to otherwise soft materials. The effect was less about wrapping the body in fabric than building a second, fluid space around it.

Colors That Trace the Depths of the Sea

The quiet whites of the opening gradually gave way to pale pink, seafoam green, turquoise and flashes of lime.

This was not a straightforward progression of tropical blues. Instead, the palette captured the shifting conditions of the sea: humid air, light reflected across the surface, and sunlight filtering through water. These were colors that resisted fixed definitions, changing subtly as they moved across different textures and silhouettes.

In several looks, vivid tops were paired with voluminous bottoms in neutral shades, allowing color to appear almost like light suspended within an open space. Wide-leg trousers and skirts moved a fraction behind the models’ steps, revealing silhouettes that came fully alive only in motion.

Sneakers and flat shoes gave the collection’s poetic premise a welcome sense of reality. They brought its aquatic imagery back to the ground, reinforcing the idea that these were clothes designed not simply to be observed, but to be lived in.

Translating Marine Life into Movement

As navy and black entered the collection, the atmosphere shifted from the brightness of the surface toward the mystery of deeper water.

The forms and colors of dolphins, Penghu octopuses and coral found in the waters around Taiwan were reinterpreted through prints, embroidery, fringe and three-dimensional details. Against black grounds, saturated colors resembled coral or tiny organisms glowing in a dark underwater landscape.

Marine life appeared not only as surface decoration, but also through the physical behavior of the clothes. Irregular layers, volumes extending away from the body, and hems that rippled with every step carried the organic movement of the sea into the garments themselves.

At times, the printed motifs felt slightly too literal, allowing the reference to overtake the construction. The collection was at its strongest when these elements were integrated with layered textures and sculptural cutting. In those moments, the vitality of the ocean moved beyond ornament and became part of the garment’s structure and rhythm.

Structure Within Softness

At the heart of “Island Tides” was CHARINYEH’s ability to treat fluidity as something more complex than draping alone.

Precise patternmaking gave each garment a distinct outline while preserving freedom of movement within it. Softness and strength, weightlessness and gravity, organic forms and deliberate construction coexisted in a careful balance.

Toward the end of the show, contrasts of black and off-white brought greater depth and definition to the collection’s earlier translucency. The sea was no longer presented only as a luminous, life-filled environment, but as a space that also holds darkness, distance and the unknown.

What CHARINYEH proposed this season was not clothing that simply imitated the appearance of the ocean. Instead, the collection sought to recreate the physical sensation of entering it: the slowing of the breath, the release from gravity, and the quiet awareness of the space between the body and its surroundings.

Rather than reducing Taiwanese culture and nature to recognizable symbols, Yeh translated them through silhouette, material and movement. Deeply grounded in the memory of place yet open enough to speak across borders, “Island Tides” offered a distinctly Taiwanese perspective expressed through the universal language of the body.
